What others have said about this book:
This book proves that one person’s trash really is another person’s treasure. Adam Buckingham presents ideas on how
waste materials can be used to educate and entertain children in this brightly coloured, well laid out book. He also
demonstrates some inspirational storage solutions using recycled materials, and suggests ways of getting family members
involved at your centre. This book is a must-have for any centre.

“You hold in your hands an absolute treasure, an informative guide to the work and play being promoted by the amazing Adam Buckingham. Adam’s work around Aotearoa and the world has been an inspiration to many, and I count myself amongst that number.
As young scientists and engineers come together to dismantle a lawnmower engine, they are talking excitedly, using REAL tools to do a REAL job, putting themselves firmly in the role of competent and fully engaged learner. This seemingly simple play creates a valuable vehicle for social and physical development, language acquisition and self-expression, a sense of accomplishment and high self-esteem, and rewards the life skills of curiosity and wonder.
Young actors and playwrights create fantasy worlds revolving around real-life props like steering wheels, padlocks, switches, knobs and chains. These wonderful assemblages provide opportunities for open-ended cooperative play, involve little or no financial outlay, are a great way for fathers and extended whanau to contribute in a way in which they feel comfortable, and are a very real example for children of materials being given a new life through recycling.
I applaud Adam’s commitment to his work, and his willingness to share that work with others. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with a passion for the education of young children and for the environment we all share.”

A word about the book from Adam:
Here is the first edition of this book. I hope it can inspire you and provide ideas from myself and other educators from around New Zealand. Ideas on what can be incorporated from solid waste materials, and the home environment, into an early childhood centre’s environment. In my volunteer time as an early childhood teacher I have made over four hundred ‘activity centres’ to date. It is true, that one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure.
